CareerCert Releases Immersive Scenario-Based Courses

“CareerCert’s scenario-based courses are elevating EMS education. They provide a safe environment for providers to build critical skills and test field readiness in real-life scenarios.”—Lisa Moore, CareerCert director of content

CareerCert recently launched scenario-based courses, a new type of online course that provides first responders with a unique experience. In this training, first responders take an active role in their education as they respond to an emergency scenario just as they would a live call.

“This is an excellent way to immerse an EMS learner into a realistic case and require them to use, hone, and cognitively grow from a challenging scenario,” says Dr. Paul Rosenberger, associate director of EMS continuing education at UT Southwestern. “The lesson uses many concepts that are friendly to adult learning theory. The learner must be active and think to work through the lesson. Being active and thinking (with constructive feedback) will develop one’s clinical knowledge and expertise.”

In this immersive training experience, learners sharpen life-saving skills as they navigate realistic emergencies online. “Providers are not limited to 4 multiple choice options. They run the scenarios, receive real-time feedback, and develop critical thinking skills that will help them improve patient outcomes in the field,” says Ray Shanahan, an EMT educator and CareerCert’s director of sales.

In emergency and healthcare education, scenario-based learning has many proven benefits and provides:

  • Deliberate practice that sharpens skills and builds field readiness
  • Interactive learning that increases learner satisfaction and improves retention
  • Safe learning environments that provide real-life experience and practice
  • Targeted, immediate feedback that improves patient outcomes

7 benefits of online learning for emergency and healthcare professionals

“At CareerCert, we strive to be leaders in EMS education so that we can connect emergency departments with training modalities and technologies that make a life-saving difference,” says Anne Perry, CareerCert’s clinical program director. “And we know that for our content to be effective, it needs to be flexible so it can easily fit providers’ schedules.”

CareerCert’s scenario-based courses are accessible online 24/7, making it easier than ever for your department to train effectively and efficiently. “The clinical scenarios are well-developed, easily navigable, focussed, and relatively brief to be done in one sitting,” explains emergency physician Dr. Kenneth Totz. “Of particular benefit were the easily understandable explanations when the right or wrong decision points were chosen.”
